An invoice is one of the most repetitive documents a finance team handles and one of the easiest to get wrong manually: a supplier name typed slightly differently, a total that does not match the line items, a duplicate submission that slips through. Manual rekeying is also, structurally, where most of the actual person-hours in invoice processing go.
What actually gets automated
Copying a figure from a scanned invoice into an ERP field is pure transcription work with no judgement in it, which is exactly what AI-based extraction removes. A working system extracts supplier, dates, totals, and line items, matches the invoice against a purchase order or contract, flags mismatches, and only routes genuine exceptions, a total that does not add up, an unrecognised supplier, to a person.
The judgement still belongs to someone
Automating extraction does not automate the decision to pay. Approval thresholds, sign-off chains, and disputed invoices still need a person in the loop; what changes is that the reading and matching work no longer consumes their time before that decision gets made.
